Preprint Research Paper

This an analytical research paper explores how cultural belief systems and human psychology fundamentally shape economic development. I placed Max Weber’s historical sociology in dialogue with David McClelland’s theories on achievement motivation and Joseph Henrich’s cognitive research to look beyond purely geographic or institutional explanations for economic growth. Using the Meiji Restoration in Japan as a historical case study, I illustrated how successful institutional modernization relies on the deliberate cultivation of specific habits of thought and conduct. This piece serves as a theoretical synthesis bridging sociology, psychology, and economic history to better understand the invisible cultural mechanisms that drive sustained prosperity.
